badly at last night's debate. for obama supporters, the big question this morning is what the heck just happened? can you chalk this up to the fact the incumbent often does not perform well in the first debate? that is just a fact. the incumbent does not often perform well in the first debate. remember how badly george bush came off in the first debate with john kerry in '04? all of the debates were in john kerry's favor in '04. was it perhaps that president obama wasn't prepared? busy campaigning and did he perhaps let the prep slide? did he go into the debate with a game plan that the best offense is a good defense? finally, can barack obama get back into a winning mode? the polls were looking good going into this, right? you got two remaining debates with romney. we are going to get some answers and smeperspective from charles blow. i read your column and i know how you feel about this. give me the quick one-liner how you thought last night went? >> obama lost. i play basketball in high school and you're not in your best form and you lose it. doesn't mean you lose the election a

. dana bash reporting live for us this morning. dan lothian is in denver, following the obama campaign. what has the president done for final preparations? >> well, he will be, this morning, going through the briefing books again, doing some final preparations and as you heard earlier, doing a walk-through later this afternoon of the venue. but the bulk of the work has happened over the last couple of days as a president was in nevada, which is, of course, a key battleground state, going through the debate camp. senator john kerry playing the role of governor romney. that's good for two reasons at least for the obama campaign because he knows mitt romney very well, coming from the state of massachusetts, but also is veteran debater himself. he's been helping the president out. now, the thing that we'll be watching for is what the real push will be from the obama campaign. and the romney campaign tonight in terms of their overall theme. as you know, it is all about domestic policies, so they're talking about the economy, about health care, about the role of government, what the

minute, this is troubling that this is what the obama campaign has resorted to. and all morning long, romney and republican party officials have been blasting out e-mails to reporters showing what president obama said back in 2008 when he was center obama at the democratic convention when he said when you're in trouble out on the campaign trail, sometimes you make these campaigns about small things and that's what the romney campaign is accusing the president of doing right now. sfwlt president talking about big bird and elmo making a run for the border now. they'll both be in ohio running across that state border this evening. 18 electoral votes on the line there. we've said it many times. no republican in modern times has won the white house without winning ohio. the president knows it, of course mitt romney's campaign knows it. what are they doing now after the debate performance to switch this into their favor in ohio. >> reporter: they're pouring a lot of energy and resources into ohio right now. you're right, mitt romney if he were somehow elected president without winning the

economy? governor romney or president obama? alison kosik has the details on this. good morning, alison. >> good morning, carol. we found out these economists surveyed were asked this question. who would most help the u.s. economy and they reluctantly picked mitt romney. also shows, sadly enough, that none of these economists were excited about either one of them. so the 17 economists, the way it was broken down, nine picked romney and three picked obama. five of them couldn't commit to anybody because they said, you know what? it doesn't matter because neither one can fix the economy. even some of the romney supporters, they aren't enthusiastic. one of them said romney's policies would be less bad for the economy than obama's. so basically, you know, it's the lesser of two evils. not exactly a big sign of confidence here. but some say romney is more likely to have more success getting legislation through congress and supporters of obama say he's more likely to reduce the deficit and cut entitlement spending like social security. but it is kind of sad, carol, it wasn't much excitement f
